ARRAS is a large, luxurious, hanging glass tapestry. It's comprised of thousands of delicate glass fibers, woven together by hand, resulting in an assembly stronger than the sum of its fragile parts. It's a metaphor for humanity itself: countless unique individuals, interacting and interweaving their lives together in an endless, overlapping web of existence. How we relate defines the quality and color of the fabric... Let our tapestry be bright and beautiful, intricate and fine, rich with fiery hues of love, compassion, justice and peace. We must each do our part: Weave well, motley and eternal threads!
Arras is the largest kiln-fired, woven glass surface in existence. It is made from several thousand glass strips, canes and stringers, hand woven into a fragile lattice before being fired over a ceramic mold in a 11x7 ft fusing kiln located at my studio in Old Town, Lansing, Michigan. I pull my own stringers and cane; the strips are all hand cut with a glass cutter and straight edge. Imperfections and inconsistencies in the weave structure are present and are representative of the nuances of human nature, ever-present in the glorious, real-world fabric of life. Look for them throughout!
The Artist
Mark Lewanski – aka “Rockstar of Glass” – perfected the quasi-impossible art of weaving glass strips into massive, intricate, fluid-like surfaces.
